Safeguarding Metadata
2024
Editorial Design
Safeguarding Metadata project is dedicated to the protection of metadata embedded within digital evidence—an often-overlooked yet critical component in the investigation and prosecution of war crimes. By preserving this hidden layer of information, the project underscores the indispensable role metadata plays in verifying the authenticity, origin, and context of digital files used in legal proceedings. Complementing this initiative, the project's publications adopt a visual language that reflects the conceptual framework of the work. Here, the visual imagery is intentionally subdued, serving as a backdrop to the metadata, which is brought to the forefront. Each image is presented in its entirety alongside its corresponding metadata, drawing attention to the often-ignored informational layer beneath the surface. The use of extended pauses between paragraphs further emphasizes the silence that surrounds this data—how frequently it is disregarded, erased, or lost—despite its profound evidentiary value.
